The Issue

Many young adults who age out of foster care find themselves ill-prepared for entering the workforce.

Turning 18 marks the beginning of legal adulthood and independence.  For many foster youth, however, turning 18 also marks their emancipation from the foster care system.  Many young adults that age out of the foster care system find themselves alone in the world without support or guidance from family members and often without a plan for how they will manage the many challenges of day to day life.  In most cases this happens in abrupt overnight circumstances.  Many young adults must find suitable housing and take on roles and responsibilities they are not quite ready to handle.

The Solution

Excerpt take from U.S. Housing and Urban Development report on Housing for Youth Aging Out of Foster Care, 2014

Importance of housing assistance during the transition to adulthood.  The benefits of a safe and stable place to live are widely recognized.  A growing body of literature suggest that, in additional to meeting the basis human need for shelter, housing that is safe and stable can function as a platform that promotes positive outcomes across a range of domains from education to employment to physical and mental health.  Because housing stability is intertwined with self-sufficiency, it may be especially important during the transition to adulthood.  For instance, young people with stable housing are better able to continue their schooling and maintain gainful employment.
